It is no surprise that your divorce will be hard for your children to deal with. But while your kids may have a tough time getting through the breakup, you can make it easier on them. Your divorce does not need to completely devastate your kids.
While you cannot take away all the pain your children are feeling, you can help them cope with the divorce. Here are some tips you should keep in mind.
1. Encourage communication
One crucial way to assist your kids through the dissolution of your marriage is letting them know it is okay to talk about hard things. Your children need to feel safe expressing themselves. By giving your children a sense of empowerment, you will ease their frustration. Let your kids know you are fine with them voicing their hurt.
2. Do not argue in front of them
There will undoubtedly be times when you will fight with your ex-spouse. Things can get heated before, during and after divorce. However, do your best to not let this happen when your children are present. If you expose your kids to ongoing battles between you and the other parent, they will poorly adjust to the divorce. You do not need to be the best of friends, but keep the fights to times when the kids are not around. Try to keep things civil around them.
3. Make your love loud and clear
The most important thing is to let your kids know they have loving parents. When you divorce, your kids may blame themselves. Do not let their self-esteem take a dive or believe you do not like them. Make sure you consistently reassure your children you love and support them.
Getting a divorce is always hard for everyone involved. Your kids may have a difficult time coping with everything, but you can make the process easier by following these suggestions.
