Child custody disputes within the same county in Florida can be difficult enough, so imagine having to dispute child custody issues internationally. That’s exactly the situation that Madonna and her ex-husband Guy Ritchie have found themselves in. They are in a dispute over the child custody arrangement for their 15-year-old son Rocco.
The son was apparently living with Madonna in New York but wanted to stay with his father in London after he visited him last December. Madonna wants her son to live with her in New York.
This week a judge in a London courtroom begged the parents to find an amicable solution to their child custody disagreement. He pointed out that time goes by fast and that the teenager only has so many years left as a child. He urged the parents to concentrate on the best interests of the child instead of fighting with each other.
The court decided to suspend the proceedings in London and said the New York court would have jurisdiction. He pointed out that having two ongoing cases in two jurisdictions with two sets of lawyers was unnecessary and costly.
The two split up in 2008 after being married for eight years. A family court had approved an agreement that Rocco would live in the U.S. with his mom and also spend time with his dad. Although this type of situation can be very complex, with the right representation, both sides may be able to come to an agreement that works for both parents and the children involved.
